ERICH RAEDER
(1876 - 1960) Commander and Chief of the German Navy (1933 - 1943) who was largely responsible for its expansion. Retired over growing differences with Hitler. Important partly-printed D.S. "Raeder", 1p. 10" x 14", "Supreme Headquarters of the Kriegsmarine", Berlin, Sep. 29, 1939, the promotion of Reinhard Suhren to the rank of "Oberleutnant sur Zee" effective October 1st, signed by Raeder at bottom. Light soiling else fine, with large blind-embossed seal. In the original presentation folder with large gilt eagle on front cover. RICHARD SUHREN (1916-1984) began his U-boat career in 1938 spending a year on a year as 1st watch officer on U-48 where he received the Knights Cross for his contribution in the sinking of 200,000 GRT of merchant shipping. In April 1941 he took command of U-564 with which he sank 18 merchant vessels of 95,544 GRT, one war ship and damaged four merchant vessels, receiving his Oak Leaves. Suhren left the boat and became an instructor in October 1942 and eventually the Commander-in-Chief of U-boats of the North Sea.
