Description:

(1876 - 1960) Commander and Chief of the German Navy (1933 - 1943) who was largely responsible for its expansion. Retired over growing differences with Hitler. Likely great association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Berlin, Feb. 7, 1934, a warm letter sent to a high-ranking 'Obergruppenfuhrer' about his interest in the growing German navy before World War II. In part: 'Dear Mr. Obergruppenfuhrer! I allow myself to enclose the January issue of those published in my area of command...and have ordered that the magazine be delivered regularly in the future...with the wish that your warm interest in the Reichsmarine and the questions of our naval defense should receive new nourishment through this. The monthly covers all matters of naval warfare and the most important questions of seafaring in essays and notes and will hopefully be welcomed to you...' The recipient adds some annotations in pencil at the upper-left. Two file holes, one pen stroke at left, else fine. There were just eight individuals promoted to Obergruppenfuhrer by the end of 1934, thus this letter must have been sent to one of the following men: Heinrich Himmler, Rudolf Hess, Sepp Dietrich, Walter Buch, Kurt Daluege, Richard Walther Darre, Fritz Weitzel, or Franz Xaver Schwarz.
