(1801 – 1895) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run, and led a corps in diversionary moves during Gettysburg. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Qrs. 4th Corps.', June 27, 1862, to Senator W.A. Harris. In part: ‘...Conversing with General Peck...upon the subject of your visit to the battlefield of the 31st May, we both agree to regret that we did not see you...Gen. Peck (now in command of Casey's Division) and myself both hope you that you will not make up your mind as to the merits or demerits of the Fourth Corps in the battle of the 31st until you see our reports. When the last line of battle was formed Gen. Naglee was far to the rear – he having left the field before it was formed...The safety of the country depends entirely on the safety and success of this army, and this army is now in a somewhat precarious situation. It requires constant reinforcement s to keep up the spirit of the troops...' Signed at the conclusion. Inlaid into 4to. stock. Very light spotting, else fine.
