Description:

(1801 – 1895) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run, and led a corps in diversionary moves during Gettysburg. Good content A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Tahoe City, California, Aug. 21, 1889. In part: ‘...Your flattering letter...duly received. Being here in the mountains and out of reach of paper and books I am unable to give you the dates of my several appointments. You will find those dates in Major General George W. Cullins Register of Graduates from the U.S. Military Academy...probably in all public libraries...My own book which you so highly compliment contains most of the information you will require...General John F. Miller, U.S. Senator from California knew my case and not long prior to his death, volunteered to bring in a Bill to place me on the retired list...his death...deprived me of a powerful friend...being now in my eightieth year...I have become indifferent to fame. It is true my feelings are often aroused when I reflect on the gross injustice of which I was the subject...I was made a scapegoat by a commander who was never, to my knowledge and belief, within the range of a hostile weapon. I was never able to obtain a hearing or a trial and on the 6th of May, 1864 I resigned from the army in disgust...' The incident referred to which led Keyes to resign happened during the Gettysburg campaign when he had a disagreement with General John A. Dix on his plan for aggressive action at Richmond leading Keyes to retreat from his position at Talleysville, Virginia. Very good.
