Description:

(1801 - 1895) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run, and led a corps in diversionary moves during Gettysburg. Good content war-date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 2pp. 4to., 'Head Quarters of Brigade', Arlington, Sep. 12, 1861 to 'Hon. A. P. Hascall', likely Augustus Porter Hascall (1800-1872), American politician, judge, and a U.S. Representative from New York. In part: '...Having had the benefit of the services of your son Capt. H. A. Hascall as a staff officer...in the Battle of Bulls run, I feel it a duty to write you in praise of his good conduct...[his] talents & military education...particularly fit him for a staff officer. But on the field of battle I never found his equal...In the thickest of the fight his faculties were always in full & harmonious exercise. And during the retreat he displayed that fortitude which is the glory of a soldier...' Slightly trimmed, folds, with tape stains showing through, still quite good. Herbert A. Hascall would be brevetted Lieutenant Colonel in March, 1865 and would become a career officer.
