Description:

ENOLA GAY TAILGUNNER GEORGE R. CARON''S "GOOD CONDUCT" MEDAL
Technical Sergeant George Robert "Bob" Caron (1919–1995) was the tail gunner, the only defender of the twelve crewmen, aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Facing the rear of the B-29, his vantage point made him the first man to witness the cataclysmic growth of the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima. Caron''s photos are the only official stills of the explosion. A unique and important relic honoring Caron''s service, his U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal named to him" "GEORGE CARON" on the obverse by way of engraving, a choice which the recipient could make at the time of the award. The medal emanates from a 40+-year collection of Manhattan Project memorabilia accumulated by a Midwest collector and was obtained from Caron directly. Sold with a S.P. 8" x 10" b/w, an image of the crew of the Enola Gay, boldly signed by Caron adding: "TAIL GUNNER - ENOLA GAY HIROSHIMA 6 AUG 1945". Also present is a custom-printed signature card, signed by Caron.
