Description:

(ENOLA GAY) GEORGE CARON
(1919 - 1995) Tail gunner and the only defender of the Enola Gay during the historic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Facing the rear of the B-29, his vantage point made him the first man to witness the cataclysmic growth of the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima. Good grouping of three signed items, includes: an A.L.S. 'Bob" (Caron's middle name was 'Robert') and in full in block letters, 8pp. 8vo., Denver, Jan. 5, 1980 to a friend. In part: '...I just sold my whole outfit...It had no Enola Gay significance...in near mint condition because we hardly used it in [B-]29s...Sure glad you didn't get stuck with that lying S.O.B. Sutherland. He's on my shit list...The ones that really piss me off are the ones who send a ton of first day covers...and can't send return postage...I have a lot of items carried with me on the Enola Gay and some day I'll catalog them. Maybe they would be worth something to the right collector...' Also included are two 3.5 x 5.5 in. color signed candid photos, one aboard the B-29 'Fifi", in in a flight suit. Very good.
