(1895 - 1964) American Air Force lieutenant general, commanded the Fifth Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II and led it to victory at the Bismarck Sea. Whitehead's innovations led to further successes throughout the theater, especially at Leyte. Good content and association A.L.S. on "Far East Air Forces" letterhead, 4pp. 4to., Tokyo, Jan. 9, 1949 to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and in the battle for St. Lo, through France, the Hurtgen Forest, and at Aachen. In part: "...I do not believe that the Red [Russians] means to fight...so long as she is making gains...without firing a shot. She is getting her gang into control of China...USSRs scheme...is a strong containing action in Europe and a double envelopment of Asia...she has dissident elements eager to cooperate in Indo China...Iran will feel the weight of the Soviet...Middle East oil is the real pot of gold...pressure on Greece can be maintained rather cheaply...[we are] on the defensive in almost every area...Japan...is the poorhouse of the world...Tactical errors are not difficult to correct.
