Description:

ENGRAVED ANTIQUE GOBLET AWARDED BY HERMANN GORING TO KNIGHTS CROSS RECIPIENT JOACHIM HELBIG
A fine association goblet dedicated by Hermann Goring to Luftwaffe bomber pilot JOACHIM HELBIG (1915-1985). This exceptional piece is an 11" tall antique goblet, possibly from Goring's own holdings, and it originally dates to the 1860s. The goblet bears its period design features of a beautifully sculpted "trunk" serving as the stem of the goblet, adorned with oak leaves and branches about the top and additional leaves at the bottom. The lid of the goblet is similarly adorned. The goblet was then fitted with a carefully-crafted silver wreath of oak leaves with a Luftwaffe eagle at its center, with a mobile swastika mounted beneath the eagle's talons. The opposite side of the goblet has been carefully hand-engraved: "Ded. Major Jochen Helbig on 28.9.42 through Reichsmarshall and Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe Goring". The bottom of the goblet bears the same engraving one would find on a conventional honor goblet: "For Great Success in the Air War 1942". A hallmark on the bottom of the goblet reads: "12 LOTH" dating its creation to ca. 1860 and showing it to be the highest purity of silver. Bundesarchiv and German Historical Museum, Berlin, records also show that Goring owned many examples of silver of very similar type and age, kept by him at Carinhall. Helbig had received his Swords to the Knights Cross on the date engraved on the goblet. A superb relic! Helbig, a bomber pilot is credited with the destruction of 182,000 gross register tons of Allied shipping accomplished in 480 missions flown. He participated in the invasions of Norway, Belgium and France, then was posted to the Mediterranean where he operated against Malta, the British Mediterranean Fleet and in support of the Afrikakorps. Helbig became the 20th recipient of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
