Description:

Fascinating original typed D.S., 2pp. legal folio, London, Sep. 1, 1939, prepared and initialed by an official of the American Embassy in London and submitted to Consul John G. Erhardt from whose estate the document derives. On the very day Germany invaded Poland and England and Germany officially were at war, this memorandum sets forth the preparations made in the event of an air attack by the Germans. In part: '...All windows to the Embassy's basement have been heavily sandbagged...sealed inside with shields...a gas infiltration machine has been installed ...to take care of 120 people. Two doorways have been cut in the basement...Gas masks have been furnished...to all members of the staff...A portable battery wireless set has been purchased...Dark blinds have been installed...A liberal supply of first aid materials and equipment...We also have 3 dozen buckets and 10 chemical fire extinguishers..." Fine.
