Description:

Fantastic archive of field orders and reports, comprised of 15 to 20 printed pages total, from the commander of the 306th Engineers Regiment Thatcher T. P. Luquer, whose regiment served in the Meuse-Argonne offensive shortly before war's end, detailing the end of the war. Far too exhaustive to realistically summarize, just the most notable examples include: a field order dated the day of the armistice at 9:30 hours, providing the declaration of the oncoming armistice and stating to the A.E.F. troops, in part: '...all communication with the enemy is forbidden, both before and after the cessation of hostilities, until further notice...the arrangement is merely a cessation of hostilities and not an arrangement of peace...keep proper security and be at all times in readiness for further operations...'; a 'summary of intelligence' from Nov. 10 to Nov. 11, 2pp. folio, bearing a summation of enemy movements, artillery, infantry, aeronautics, and more. The report indicates '...Strong resistance by the enemy confined almost entirelty to machine guns, automatic rifles, and artillery...' yet adds the '...enemy resisted strongly yet no counter attack...'. Sold with an 'examination of prisoners' captured Nov. 9th and 10th, released on the day of the armistice, in which the prisoners reveal the location of Axis machine guns, artillery, and auxiliary troops; a sarcastic 'summary of unintelligence', dated three days after the armistice was signed, detailing that '...the enemy reacted violently all over the sector...two men wearing gas masks were seen entering a sewer near Manhole (Manhuelless)...the enemy infantry were extremely active during the day, jumping up and down and climbing trees...the 420th Landsakes Division now opposite our front is composed entirely of one-legged men impressed into the service from the great Sauerkraut factories at Essen...'; and much more. Sold with a a field-marked map from the 306th Engineers, ca. 1918, showing the Allied camps and barracks near Verdun and the Allied front. A truly informative grouping.
