Description:

Good content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., "Headquarters", Nov. 21, 1864, from Union Army soldier John Houston, Co. H., NY 50th Engineers, to his brother Thomas, idolizing Philip Sheridan and his brigade. In part: "...This General you see on the other side of the paper has been to North Carolina fighting the rebels...and is on his way to join our Army with one hundred thousand men...[The rebels] could not have stood 5 minutes. We would have belted the piss out of them in no time but their big rain stopped it for awhile, for Sheridan can't travel with his artillery through the mud...The rebels are afraid as their life of him...when it clears off and he gets to us, the war will soon come to a close...". Fewer than six months after this letter was written, Sheridan's pursuit of the Confederate army helped to force Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. The last page of the letter contains the printed lyrics of a battle song, "Sheridan's Great Victory", celebrating the general's accomplishments in the Shenandoah Valley. Minor toning and foxing throughout, else very good.
