Description:

ENGINE ROOM LOGBOOK OF U-889
A rare find, the U-boat engine room log for U-889, 46 completed pages, 8vo., from approx. April 10, 1945, five days after her patrol started, to midnight, May 11, 1945 - only hours before U-889 would hoist a black surrender flag and submit to a Canadian frigate. The book is barely in keeping with what one would expect of a crack Kriegsmarine crew. Entries are timely but sloppy, and following Donitz's order to surrender, they became even more so, reflecting the resignation of the crew to their fate. Every time an engine room order was relayed or the situation in the engine room otherwise changed, an entry was made. Information recorded includes time, engine room telegraph order given, power source (ie: snorkel, batteries, main engine), vessel's course, comments, etc. Of course, entries are in several different hands, reflecting changes in shifts. Not translated. The book is worn and soiled throughout, covers lacking, and first two pages (with no data), split. Still, a fascinating compilation of information documenting the end of one of Hitler's greatest weapons. U-889 was a was a Type IXC/40 U-boat with a brief career. She was commissioned on 4 August 1944, with Kapitanleutnant Friedrich Braeucker (Crew IV/37) as commander. Until 14 March 1945 she was attached to 4th U-boat Flotilla for training. She was then assigned to 33rd U-boat Flotilla, a combat unit based at Flensburg. Her first, and only, active patrol started on 5 April 1945. She sank no vessels before she was ordered to surrender. On 14 May 1945, U-889 was commissioned into the RCN and decommissioned in December 1945, sunk in 1947.
