Important content T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Papenburg, Feb. 21, 1939, from the "Commander of Papenburg Concentration Camp" (the "Emslandlager" camps), to the Governor of Austria, Josef Burckel seeking to employ 600 new guards at the camps and setting forth their specifications. In part: "...1.) Belong to the SA 2.) Age: 23 - 28 years 3.) Single 4.) Good, resistant 5.) Minimum size 1,70 mtr. 6.) No criminal record Applicants who meet the conditions must immediately submit the following documents: 1. ) Application for employment 2.) Curriculum vitae, handwritten 3.) Police certificate of good conduct from the past 5 years...4.) Certificate of good conduct for military service if the applicant was a soldier 5.) Medical certificate of the responsible SA doctor..." Docket and file holes, else fine. The Emslandlager were a series of 15 moorland labor, punitive and POW camps, active from 1933 to 1945 and located in Lower Saxony, administered from Papenburg. In June 1933 the first 1,000 German political opponents to be held in protective custody arrived. In 1934, the camp became a punitive one, and criminals, homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses arrived in large numbers, until all the political inmates were moved to the Emslandlager Aschendorfermoor camp in 1937. Starting in 1940, the camp housed increasing numbers of German military personnel held in custody for desertion or unauthorized absence.
