Description:

(1905 – 1989) Italian-American physicist and Nobel laureate, who discovered the elements technetium and astatine, and the antiproton, a subatomic antiparticle, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959. From 1943 to 1946 he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a group leader for the Manhattan Project. He found in April 1944 that Thin Man, the proposed plutonium gun-type nuclear weapon, would not work because of the presence of plutonium-240 impurities. T.Ms.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d., ca. 1965], likely a quote from an article or book about Segre. In part: “…Knowing what you do, would you do the same again…[participation] in the decision to build and use the bomb[?]…Under the circumstances prevailing…yes. We knew the Nazis could make the bomb and were working on it. We would have been crazy not to make the bomb…We could not be sure atomic bombs would not start dropping on us…Hitler would have won the war. As for my approving the use of the bomb, the President had hardly any alternative…the war would go on for a long time…the decision was the only one possible. But I am glad I was not the president…” Fine.
