Description:

(1845 – 1921) French philosopher of religion and science, with a firm belief that both subjects are compatible. Fine lot of twenty-one signed items, nineteen of which are A.L.S.s, most 1p. 8vo., Paris, ranging from 1899-1913, all in French. The majority of these letters were sent to the editor of the magazine ‘Les Documents du Progres', Fernand Mazade, discussing numerous subjects such as sleep, fear, trees, happiness, sports, etc. In a letter addressed to ‘Mon cher colleague' Boutroux expresses his regret that the colleagues' thesis was not supported, but that the decision ultimately was that of university review. The remaining letters, addressed only as ‘Cher Monsieur', entail everyday matters, including: recovering from the flu, meeting with a correspondent, the receipt of a letter, staying with his wife at a hotel, and his work with the Thiers Foundation; WITH a signed photo postcard, 3.5 x 5.25 in., showing a seated Boutroux. Beneath the photo, he writes in full: ‘To do, to work, to create, to make life easier, what is more admirable? But let us beware of losing ourselves in the means and to submit to the very forces we create to live a better life. Paris, May 2nd 1921.' Signed at the conclusion; WITH his business card, bearing a reply to an unknown inquiry, signed on the verso. Conditions vary, overall, very good to fine.
