Description:

'EMANCIPATION' BY FELIX O. CARR DARLEY
A striking original work by the noted nineteenth century illustrator FELIX OCTAVIUS CARR DARLEY (1822 - 1888), a ink and gray wash on paper (or board), 17" x 10" (sight), signed "F.O.C. Darley" at the lower left. Untitled, but the painting clearly depicting the struggles of the Civil War at left as the "Angel of Death" bearing a blazing torch hovers above the scene of a desperate clash of soldiers. At right, Columbia hears the appeal of a chained slave beseeching her for his freedom as a white man plows a field in the background. Nicely matted and set in a period frame. Overall fine condition and a superb example of this prominent ninteenth century illustrator considered one of the giants of his day. See http://www.focdarley.org for more information.
