655. OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807) American politician, delegate to the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Good content manuscript D.S. 1p. 4to., [Hartford], Sept. 23, 1775, ordering payment to "Cpt. John Chester... the Sum of one hundred and Thirty pounds money in Bills, for the Use of the Company in the Colony Service..." John Chester's company responded to the Lexington Alarm in April 1775. Chester was soon promoted to major as a member of Wolcott's Connecticut State Regiment (1775-6) and then as a Colonel of the Connecticut State Regiment through the end of that year.
