Description:

759. HAVELOCK ELLIS (1859 - 1939) English scientist, best known for his research into the sociology of sex. A fascinating archive of well over 100pp. of material concerning the publication of his groundbreaking and most influential work Psychology of Sex, originally published in 1933. Psychology of Sex sought to divorce human sexuality from the prevailing notion that they could be viewed as emanating from concepts of health or disease. Instead, Ellis posited that sexual behavior was more a matter of mind, using nascent concepts of psychoanalysis put forth by Jung and Freud. A version of Psychology of Sex was published by Emerson Books in New York, 1938, and our material was obtained directly from the Emerson Press. It ranges from an A.L.S. to retained correspondence about the publication, legal documents, written to Percy Elias of Emerson Books, and much more. Included in the lot is a signed hardcover copy of Psychology of Sex, New Edition (New York: Emerson Books, 1938), signed on the edition page. The very late A.L.S. to Elias, 1p. 4to., Ipswich, Feb. 11, 1939, reads in part: "...My best thanks for your kind cable of greeting...on this 80th birthday. It has been in my mind for some time to ask if you can send me a few more of the circular for my book...". Other material includes copyright documents from the Liveright Publishing Corp. regarding obtaining the rights to Psychology of Sex, as well as his work Love and Marriage. There are also documents concerning contracts, translation rights, advances, royalty statements, typed extracts of letters from Ellis to various people, original photographic proofs for Ellis' portrait on the cover of the book, and much more. Many documents exhibit expected wear, paper clip impression, and so forth. Book is separated at spine, generally good. Overall a revealing archive pertinent to one the last century's most important and enduring psychological works, worthy of further research. $400 - 600
