Lot 591
591. WILLIAM ELLERY (1727-1820) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery was a prominent Rhode Island lawyer who represented the state in the Continental Congress and in the proceedings leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Good content D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., 1787], his signed attestation to proceeding of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island in which the Assembly resolves to make payment to the Continental Loan Office for the state's quota as determined by Congress for sums due for: "...Ox teams and conductors employed in the campaign of the year 1781..." Very good. We note it took six years for Congress to assess Rhode Island this share of the costs of prosecuting the war against England. $400-500
