Description:

(1837 – 1880) 'Nell', wife of the 21st President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur. She died of pneumonia in January 1880; her husband was elected vice-president that November. At the White House, Arthur would not give anyone the place that would have been his wife's. He asked his sister Mary (Mrs. John E. McElroy) to assume certain social duties and help care for his daughter. Very rare A.L.S. 'E.L.H.A.' on black-bordered mourning stationery, 6pp. 8vo., New York, May 21, 1879 to her brother Henry. In part: '...Your dear ones got away yesterday at six p.m. in the Bolivia. They were all well but I think were not overwhelmed with joy at going, and indeed the children would gladly have stayed behind...The ship was not so nice as we expected...but Bet had everything to make her comfortable and with plenty of books she will enjoy...She looked so badly when she first came that I was really shocked to see her, but if she goes on improving as she did while with me, I think you will have a new wife when she gets back gain. I honestly think this trip will prolong her life thirty years...I am so sorry dear old fellow you have had such a time and so thankful you are on the road to health again. It was pretty hard for you, to be sick...When you come North in the summer, you will find a bed here at your disposal, but if Chester is at home, I am afraid you will have to take care of yourself outside...Take good care of yourself and have a good time! Your loving sister, E.L.H.A.' Slightly worn folds and some soiling, with worn transmittal envelope. A rare First Lady.
