Elihu Root 1845-1937 Secretary of State in Theodore Roosevelts cabinet, awarded the 1912 Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in European and Latin American disputes. An excellent bound collection of Root's holograph notes, 16 pp., being his personal notes for a speech given by him in the Senate on February 10, 191 1 This was a powerful speech by Root strongly opposing a constitutional amendment permitting the direct election of senators. The notes are laid into a blank, leather-bound book with gold-embossed title on the cover, and with the published text of the speech. On the front flyleaf he writes: My. Dear Mr. Burr I never try to preserve notes for speeches but somebody seems to have done so in this case for the notes which follow in this volume are genuine. Faithfully yours, Elihu Root Dec. 8, 1924 Cover rubbed at edges, otherwise very good.
