Description:

(ELECTION OF 1916) CHARLES EVANS HUGHES
((1862 - 1948) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1930-41) Secretary of State (1921-25), defeated by Wilson in a try for the presidency. A terrific relic of the 1916 campaign, a 'mistake' edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch bearing the bold headline: "HUGHES IS ELECTED PRESIDENT...EARLY RETURNS MAKE HIS VICTORY APPEAR CERTAIN" The election was indeed a close race, with Wilson narrowly defeating Hughes by a margin of 23 electoral votes, prompting this mistaken issue by a paper eager for a scoop. The lead article reads, in small part: "States Believed Sure for Wilson Turn to Republican Column, and Only Landside on Pacific Coast Could Wipe Out Overwhelming Majority Against Democrats.... Returns received at midnight indicate that Charles Evans Hughes and Charles Warren Fairbanks have been elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the United States by a decisive majority. The vote of the Republican candidates in the electoral college will be approximately 300, perhaps 330 or more..." Hughes 'mistake' newspapers are much rarer than the 'Dewey Defeats Truman' paper of 1948. This edition bears some moderate toning and damp stains but still makes for an excellent display (and conversation) piece. Offered together with a partly-printed D.S. as Governor of New York, 1p. 4to., Albany, Nov. 17, 1909 proclaiming Nov. 25, 19089 as Thanksgiving. Fine condition. Together, two pieces.
