Lot 1169
1169. ELECTION OF 1856 Fine content A.L.S. of John A. Hillery, 3pp. 4to., New York, Oct. 2, 1856 to his friend urging him to vote for Fillmore and the Nativist ticket, predicting his victory and describing the prevailing political mood in New York in the fall of 1856. In part: "... We have had several very large processions here in the Evenings (Buchanan & Fillmores) but no Fremont - The Fremonters are afraid to Show their hand, while the other two factions come out boldly & Show their trumps. There was a very large procession here last evening of the Fillmore cartmen which was a very imposing sight. Some 4000 Cartmen with their horses & carts were out, Fillmore stock is rising rapidly none to be had in the market at any Price Buchanan's platform is decaying and Fremont's Wolly Horse is dying fast - Mustard Liniment will not help him- the Fillmoreites are to have a grand procession here shortly I wish you were here to hear the feelings & applause of the people it would do your heart good- The Leases between the people & Fillmore are about to be signed and on the 4 of March (if all are true) he will be the lessee for the next 4 years...0 Keep your eyes open - vote for a man who knows no North, South, East or West. Nothing but the Union...Fremont for the North Buchanan for the South Fillmore for the Union..." Needless to say, New York was not the bellwether for the election, Buchanan won the Presidency, Fremont took New York, and Fillmore managed only Maryland! Light foxing, usual folds, with a few minor tears and pinholes, otherwise very good. Framed with glass on both sides to reveal text. $150-200
