Description:

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
(1884 - 1962) First Lady, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Eleanor was active in a wide range of liberal and humanitarian projects. Fine content T.L.S. as First Lady-elect on her personal letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., New York, Jan. 10, 1933, to a lady and marked "Personal and confidential". The future First Lady weighs-in on temperance, in part: "...I am enclosing a copy of my speech...I did not advocate the drinking of gin or whiskey. I am a dry personally and would hardly suggest that anyone, let alone a girl, should do this. I stated conditions, which - no matter how dry we are - we must face in many cities...temperance must be preached even ahead of total abstinence, much though I prefer total abstinence myself...". Sold with a copy of her Dec. 9, 1932 radio speech, aimed at "the girl of today". A few tiny trivial tape stains in extreme margins, else fine. Eleanor may have been dry, but husband Franklin enjoyed scotch and brandy, and had the good sense to do away with the evils of Prohibition.
