Description:

(1884 - 1962) First Lady, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Eleanor was active in a wide range of liberal and humanitarian projects. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Hyde park, Aug. 2, 1949 to 'Lang', in full: 'You were very good to write me about the Cardinal Spellman episode. Your father and mother were kind enough to send me a message from Maine. Many thanks to you.' File holes at top, else very good. A steadfast social, political, and theological conservative, New York Catholic Cardinal Spellman often took positions on public policy issues, and in the summer of 1949 he engaged Eleanor Roosevelt in a vitriolic public debate about the merits of federal funding for parochial schools. When she indicated her opposition to such aid in her newspaper column, Spellman accused her of anti-Catholicism, thus opening a bitter public rift with the former first lady that lasted until August 1949 when both parties diffused the tension by releasing statements that clarified their views.
