Lot 38
revolutionary and statesman, member of the Committee of Safety from July, 1776, delegate to Congress and the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention. Great association A.D.S. 1p. legal folio, Philadelphia, June 7, 1783 to Signer ELBRIDGE GERRY (1744-1814) who writes a lengthy (unsigned) reply on verso. In part: "...I have received your letter...directed to Mr. Lee...I have the honour of inclosing a copy of the remonstrance from the delegates of Massachusetts to Congress, respecting your affairs...I have the pleasure of some acquaintance with Mr. Warren...before I was honored with your recommendation...induce me to interest myself in his favor, but there are so many applications for places at this time...I shall soon have the pleasure of paying you my personal respects in Philadelphia...". On verso Gerry writes: "...As the Business, on the Part of the Delegates, appears to have been conducted with the greatest propriety & Judgement...please to accept & present to the other Gentlemen, my Acknowledgement...I am much obliged to you for inclosing my letter to Mr. Lee...". Good content, likely referring to Gerry's return to Congress following a three-year hiatus taken over a financial dispute. Very good, ex: Philip D. Sang Collection.
