Description:

EINSATZSTAB REICHLEITER ROSENBERG OFFICER'S VISOR CAP
A excessively rare officer's visor cap from the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, the organization headed by party ideologue Alfred Rosenberg and tasked with the cultural looting of Europe. This cap has an orange-brown body with hunter green sideband. Three bands of braided wire-over-cloth piping trim the hat and they are expertly joined at the rear. A flat wire national eagle insignia on matching cloth background is hand-sewn at front, just above silver bullion oak leaves and cockade which likewise is set on a green backing and is hand-sewn to the hat. Silver wire officer's chin cords rest above the brown vulkanfibre visor, and they are secured to the cap with two silver pebbled buttons. The visor is in fine condition, though about 2" of the right side is coming loose from the body of the cap and will require attention. A calfskin sweatband is sewn within (it too requires a bit of stitching), and an old paper label with the size "57" is attached thereto. A shield-shaped sweat protector remains sewn to the gold cloth lining and it is marked by the maker: "Schellenberg". But for the loosening visor and sweatband, and a 2mm. length of abraded silver piping, this ultra-rare visor cap is in near-mint condition and a worth addition to any prestigious collection. An identical cap is illustrated in John Angolia's reference work "In the Service of the Reich". The Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR), the 'Special Task Force' headed by Rosenberg, was one of the main Nazi agencies engaged in the plunder of cultural valuables in Nazi-occupied countries during the Second World War. A particularly notorious operation by the ERR was the plunder of art from French Jewish and a number of Belgian Jewish collections from 1940 to 1944 that were brought to the Jeu de Paume building in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris for processing by the ERR Sonderstab Bildende Kunst or 'Special Staff for Pictorial Art.' That art became a target for searches made by the "Monuments Men"
