Description:

EDWIN STANTON
(1814 - 1869) Secretary of War in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet whose dismissal by Andrew Johnson led to impeachment hearings for the president. Good content war date A.L.S. as Secretary of War, 1p. 8vo., Washington, [n.d., c. 1864] to Gen. Holt requesting a "... full and thorough examination of all the matters known to Major Ives of importance to the service. It is referred to you and General Hitchcock to make the examination which is to be regarded as strictly confidential". The Major Ives Stanton mentions here is mostly likely Brayton Ives (1840 - 1914) who served as an officer from 1861 to 1865 and was brevetted a brigadier general for gallantry at Reams Station, Deep Bottom, Five forks and Sayler's Creek. He later served as president of the New York Stock Exchange and the Northern Pacific Railway. Usual folds, else very good.
