EDWARD W. HINKS (2)
(1830 – 1894) Union brigadier general who was the first to command a division of black men in a major action (Petersburg). He also was active at Ball's Bluff and Antietam. A.L.S. ‘Edw. W. Hincks', 1p. 4to., Cambridge, MA, June 11, 1886, to a ‘Sawyer', enclosing a check for a subscription payment for a G.A.R. hall in Saugus bearing his name. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with slight toning to the edges, else very good to fine. SOLD WITH: Black ink signature ‘Edw. W. Hinks' on a 2.75 in. x 1.5 in. slip of paper, giving the more common spelling of his surname, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl. U. S. Vols'. Affixed to a backing card, evenly toned, else very good. Two pieces.
