Description:

EDWARD W. BROOKE
(1919-2005) African American Senator from the state of Massachusetts, the first one to be popularly elected, in 1966, co-writer of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prominent critic of President Richard Nixon. Great content T.L.S. as Senator on official letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington D.C., January 31, 1974, responding to a constituent regarding his support of President Nixon during the ongoing Watergate Scandal. In part: '...Your message is a simple one: It is my moral and political duty to 'support the President.' My failure to do so is 'traitorous' to the President and the Republican Party. May I invoke a little history...In 1968, though Mr. Nixon was not my Convention choice, I traveled the length and breadth of our country with and for him...At the President's personal request I also took the podium in Miami Beach to second his nomination...I have always campaigned as a Republican...This brings us up to date and to the heart of the matter: 'Watergate'...It is not just the stupid, unprofitable break in attempt by 'The Committee to Re-elect the President.' It is perjury. Obstruction of Justice. The solicitation and acceptance of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions. It is a pattern of arrogance, illegality and lies which ought to shock the conscience of every Republican...Had he [Nixon] embraced candor, truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as his weapon, the storm would have probably long since abated...' Staple hole to the top left, else very fine condition.
