Description:

EDWARD VIII AND WALLIS, DUCHESS OF WINDSOR
(1894-1972) King of England whose abdication of the throne in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson rocked Great Britain and led to his spending the balance of his life in self-imposed exile. A great pair of items, the first a T.L.S. of Edward, 1p. 4to., Canadian National Railways, Sept. 22, 1924, to Sir Ashley Sparks, in part: "...I should like to tell you how much I appreciate all that you have done in connection with my visit to Long Island. You have been most kind in many ways and I am really grateful...". With holograph greeting, one emendation and holograph closing. Very good. Along with WALLIS, DUCHESS OF WINDSOR, partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Mar. 18, 1955, a receipt for jewelry made by the famous firm Van Cleef & Arpels, sent to her while aboard the SS New Grand Haven, in which Wallis certifies that she received a package containing "...Purse, 18K gold with diamonds...Clips, 2, gold with ruby, sapphire and pearl 'King' and 'Queen' of Hearts...". Boldly signed at bottom. Of course, Wallis is well-known for her fantastic collection of jewels, many of which were recently auctioned by Sothebys in London. Two pieces, very good condition.
