EDWARD SHIPPEN
(1639-1712) Early Pennsylvania settler, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Philadelphia (1699) and the second Mayor of Philadelphia (1701-1703). His great-great-grandaughter was Peggy Shippen, wife of Benedict Arnold. Manuscript D.S. "Edwd. Shippen" 1p. oblong folio, Philadelphia, 13 Mar. 1705/6, a deed between Shippen and JOHN SNOWDON (who also signs) of Bucks County, in which Shippen sells Snowden a 45 foot-wide lot on Second Street in Philadelphia "...and in length from the Sd Second Street to a thirty foot Street intended to be made by the Side of the Sd Swam or Dock one hundred & Sixty five foot...". An ornate piece documenting the early development of Philadelphia. Usual folds, light toning, else fine condition.
