(1749-1800) The youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence and later Governor of South Carolina. Retained copy of a letter written by a secretary and kept as a retained copy, 1p. 4to., South Carolina, May 22, 1789, to P. Mills, in part '...you tell me you have agreed with him for the sale of 150 [barrels] of rice provided he should choose to take it, and you could not attain more. I have conversed with him...on the subject I have no objection on the bargain...should he carried by him to the credit of the debt.... he is to pay the remainder into my hands...I have just put my son on board Salius's Brig for New York.' On the verso, Rutledge himself writes: (Copy) Edward Rutledge Esqr May 22, 1789' thus signing his name. Small mouse nibbles to the left side along a fold, else fine condition. His son Henry Middleton Rutledge (1775-1844) was a major in the American Army who served in the War of 1812, First Seminole War, and was a frequent correspondent of President Andrew Jackson.
