EDWARD R. CANBY
(1817 - 1873) Union major general who commanded the Department of New Mexico stopping Sibley's assault on California. He later commanded the assault on Mobile and after the war was killed by Modoc Indians. SENDING THE BODY OF A DEAD GENERAL Fine content war-date A.D.S. on War Department letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Jan. 26, 1863, the text of a telegram sent to Brig. Gen. JAMES M. TUTTLE in Cairo, Illinois. In full: 'The Secretary of War desires you to report whether to body of Brig. Genl. Joseph B. Plummer is now in a condition to be sent to this city.' Fine condition. JOSEPH B. PLUMMER (1816-1862) was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek while commanding a battalion of Regulars. Later, Plummer commanded the 5th Division of Pope's army at New Madrid and the Island Number Ten campaign. He died in camp at Corinth on August 9, 1862 (exactly one year after Wilson's Creek) from lingering effects of his wounds and prolonged exposure in the field. Plummer was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
