Description:

EDWARD R. MURROW (1908-1965) American television journalist, a pioneer in his field remembered for his work as CBS's war correspondent and his attack on Sen. Joseph McCarthy's investigation into American Communists, which ultimately led to the end of the senator's career. Fine association T.L.S. on U.S. Information Agency letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 9, 1962 to FERENC NAGY. In part: "...I and other senior officials of the Agency will be fully occupied with appearances before the House...I would be pleased to meet with a delegation of the Assembly of Captive European Nations at a mutually convenient time..." Small tear at top margin, else fine. Ferenc Nagy (1903-1979) had been Prime Minister of Hungary from 1946 to 1947. He was elected in 1946, in Hungary's first democratic election. As prime minister, he resisted attempts by the Hungarian Communist Party to gain complete control of the government and refused to become a puppet of a Soviet backed police state, but resigned under duress (communists had kidnapped his son). Assembly of Captive European Nations or ACEN was an organization founded on September 20, 1954, as a coalition of representatives from nine nations in Central and Eastern Europe under Soviet domination after World War II. Former political and cultural leaders from Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania were members of the organization. Its main office was in New York, with branch offices in Bonn, London and Paris.
