EDWARD P. CHAPIN
(1831 - 1863) Union brigadier general, seriously wounded in the Battle of Hanover Court House, among the 86 casualties the 44th N.Y. Having raised the 116th N.Y., he participated in the assault on Port Hudson, where he was twice wounded. The second wound, within a few yards of the Rebel breastworks, proved fatal. Rare war-date A.L.S. ‘E. P. Chapin' with signed postscript, 2pp. 4to., Camp Belger, Sept. 9, 1862, in part: ‘… Major George M. Love late Captain Company & 44th U.S.V. having been formally relieved from recruiting service to accept the commission of major of this Regiment...…and been mustered as major of this Regiment. There was a vacancy of the rank of Lieut Col commencing on the 5th…at which time I was mustered out…'. Included is a postscript from Chapin, in part: ‘…I arrived here at Baltimore on Sunday last and was detained by men under Genl. Love. Went into camp at this place and am now under orders to move on the Frederick Pike…for a five miles distance…' Fine.
