Description:

EDWARD P. ALEXANDER
(1835-1910) Confederate brigadier general who was known for his proficiency as an artilleryman, most famously being the commander in charge of the Confederate bombardment preceding Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, surrendered with Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. In his post-war life, he became a professor and close personal friends with President Grover Cleveland. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Columbia, August 12, 1868, to an unnamed colonel regarding a shipment of carbine rifles. In part: '...I have ordered the carbines are requested to Jno C Cochran. I don't know that it is altogether fair to Birsell[?] & Co but as you say that the order was given [to] you some time before and was delayed in your hands...I will send them if you will stand between me and Birsell if they make the claim upon me and ask your friends to regard the reduction of terms as confidential...I suppose the shipment will hardly be in time to catch Saturday steamers...hoping your friends will be as pleased as everybody else is with their carbines...' Carbine rifles have shorter barrels than a standard rifle or musket making them lightweight and easier to handle. They were used effectively by cavalry divisions on both sides of the war and afterwards. Fine condition
