EDWARD HYDE, LORD CORNBURY
(1661 - 1723) Corrupt colonial governor of New York and New Jersey and cousin of Queen Anne accused by his political enemies of wearing women's clothes in public. Manuscript D.S. "Cornbury" as Governor of New York, 1p. oblong 8vo., New York, Apr. 10, 1708, and reads, in most part: "Came Whitman..,. of William Brittin[?] Cale[?] of Richmond County praying administration on the Estate of the sd William who dyed [sic]in testate I do direct the same to be granted accordingly." Light vertical folds, a few foxed spots, else near fine condition.
