Description:

(1744-1802) General in the Continental Army who saw action at Yorktown and was later a physician and politician. War-date A.L.S. 'Edw. Hand', 1p. 4to., Fort Henry, Nov. 15, 1777, to an unknown individual regarding troop movements. In part: '...Being disappointed in the number of troops...intended to carry into the Indian Country...now men are wanted for the immediate protection of the frontier. I have ordered those from your country to expect a Captain...and 32 men. Which I am certain for the assistance of this country...I am firmly persuaded[?] that if I have again on occasion to call on you I shall.' A few small damp stains, and paper loss in the bottom left from a seal mended with period paper. Fort Henry was the site of a siege two months prior to this letter. In September of 1777, a mixed group of Native Americans attacked the fort, burning surrounding cabins, fields, and livestock. Edward Hand was the commander of the nearby Fort Pitt and wrote to the commander of Fort Henry to warn him of rumors of an impending attack, and it was received in time for the garrison to prepare and eventually weather the siege.
