Description:

EDWARD FITZGERALD
(1763-1798) Irish aristocrat and nationalist, Lieutenant General and Commander and Chief of the United Irishmen. FitzGerald friend of Thomas Paine who embraced the cause of an Independent Irish republic based on the tenets French Revolution. Very rare A.L.S. 'Edw. Fitzgerald' 3pp. 4to., Frascati, June 12, N.Y., on integral address leaf letterhead to his sister Sophia FitzGerald in London, in part: '...I have abominable about writing to you. I know and shall not attempt an excuse, but you know how idle one gets in the country. We have been settled here ever since the Henrys went except the last week which we spent at Castletown, we bathe walk ride and in short are quite comfortable. This place is now more beauteous [7] than I can describe, fuller of plants & flowers than any place ever as, my wife quite doats [sic] on it. Have you been lately in Town or are you still in the country. I think you took a good resolution in going to the country, as I am sure you will be better...than in Town... being able to follow your own hours and plans you will find pleasant. Is Charlotte [Edward's other sister) come back. When she does what do you intend to do. Let me know what are your Schemes. We shall not be able to get to England before August at soonest for our Party will act late, 1 believe. I do not know yet what Mother intends to do. I suppose it is not yet fixed. I shall certainly go to her wherever she is. They talked of Malvern. I would rather it was not so far from Boyle Farm or Stock for I should like to make a visit to both. I supposed Charlotte will be encamped most of the summer. Give my love to her & Strutt [Charlotte's husband). I hope the little dear [FitzGerald's daughter Lucy | is well...'. It is not clear at what time in FitzGerald's illustrious career this letter was written, mention of the party indicates that it may be between 1790-1796. Absolutely worthy of further research! A 2 in. square loss at integral address leaf, possibly excising his name, otherwise light staining and wear, mounting strip at the left margin, overall, very good.
