Description:

EDWARD FERRERO
(1831 - 1899) Union brigadier general who served at Second Bull Run, South Mountain, and Antietam, but is best remembered for his dishonorable conduct, drinking behind the lines in a bombproof while his command was decimated in the ill-fated charge into the Crater at the Siege of Petersburg. War-date manuscript D.S. 3pp. 4to., Rutledge, Dec. 11, 1863. Titled ‘Proceedings of a Board of Survey' and contains ‘Special Orders No. 207' in which three officers are named to examine the insufficiencies and ‘…condition of a lot of subsistence stores just arrived at this place…'. The Board determined that the cause of the loss of supplies was the condition of the road which transported the supplies from Crab Orchard to Rutledge, as well as convoy's action to avoid the supplies falling into Confederate hands. For himself, Ferrero had been promoted to the rank of general in March 1863. Boldly signed at conclusion and very good.
