117. EDWARD EVERETT COMMENDS A GETTYSBURG PROFESSOR AT THE DEDICATION OF THE NATIONAL CEMETERY A great letter by Gettysburg College Professor Michael Jacobs written just four day's after Lincoln Gettysburg Address, in which Jacobs makes reference to Edward Everett's speech at the same occasion, 2pp. 8vo., Gettysburg, Nov. 23, 1863. He writes to Maj. Gen. Samuel W. Crawford, seeking support for his newly published book on the epic battle entitled: "Notes on the Rebel Invasion of Maryland, etc.". In part: "...Several weeks ago my son, H. E. [18 year old Henry Ester] Jacobs was at Chambersburg, Pa., for the purpose of selling my...book entitled the 'Rebel Invasion, etc.'...he informed me that you spoke favorably of the book & expressed your intention of writing me...in regard to those terrific struggles in which you & your 'Pa. Reserves' took so distinguished a part. The book had an unexpectedly rapid sale & as Hon. E. Everett saw proper to speak of it favorably in his great oration of last Thursday, the edition of 10,000 which have been printed will likely all be sold...Will you...favor me with such facts...& permit me to use your expressed opinion in regard to the merits of the work...". At the time of the battle of Gettysburg, Jacobs was a 55-year-old professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Gettysburg College. During the struggle he took copious notes on the sights and sounds that swirled around him. When the armies left and the dust settled Prof. Jacobs published his journal under the title of the above named book, which is to, this today considered one of the best eyewitness accounts of the battle. $800 - 1,000
