EDWARD D. TRACY
(1833-1863) Confederate brigadier general who fought at First Bull Run and later served in Wheeler's 19th Alabama. Tracy served in Eastern Tennessee prior to participating in the Vicksburg campaign, where he was mortally wounded at Port Gibson. Rare war-date manuscript D.S. ‘E. D. Tracy A A A Genl', 2pp. tall 4to., Tupelo, July 18, 1862, titled 'General Orders Ch I'. In part: '…I. The granting of leaves of absence for any period longer than 24 hours or to leave the lines of the forces near these headquarters will not be excused by any officers subordinate to the Major General Commanding of the Armies of the Mississippi and of the West, and no officer or soldier will be permitted to leave by railroad under a leave of absence granted by a subordinate commander. II. The Cavalry will as far as practicable be uniformly furnished with fire arms of one caliber and description…III. Each Cavalry Regiment will be provided with at least two portable forges…IV. Cavalry forces becoming unfit for service will be sent to the rear….V. Officers belonging to batteries of light or horse artillery must not be detached from this command…'. Tracy signs at conclusion, along with JOSEPH WHEELER (1836-1906). 'Fighting Joe' was a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. He signs: 'J Col Wheeler Cmdg'. Also signed by Joe Wheeler and Edward D. Tracy. Very good.
