Description:

EDWARD CORRIGAN "MICK" MANNOCK
(1887 – 1918) VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC & Bar. World War I British flying ace in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. Mannock was a pioneer of fighter aircraft tactics in aerial warfare. Days after warning fellow ace George McElroy about the hazards of flying low into ground fire, that fate befell Mannock and he was killed in action dogfighting too close to the ground on 26 July 1918. At his death he had amassed 61 "kills", the fifth highest scoring pilot of the war. Very rare, fine content war-date signed "Combats in the Air" combat report as "Captain", 1p. sm. 4to., "LENS." (France), Aug. 17, 1917. In this partly-printed form, Mannock describes his ninth "kill", made the same day while flying a Nieuport Scout armed with a Lewis gun at an altitude of 19,000 feet. He describes his adversary as a "2-Seater D.F.W.", a German recon aircraft, and sets forth their combat: "...Observed hostile machine and engaged it 1t 17,000 feet...Fired a whole drum in bursts of 10 at very close range, Nieuport being fired on by hostile observer and hit in two places. E[nemy]. A[ircraft]. heeled over and went down in a slow spinning dive with black smoke streaming from tail. Nieuport followed E.A. down for 3000 or 4000 feet. E.A. was still out of control. when it became lost to sight in clouds..." Boldly signed in black ink, also signed by Mannock's major (unidentified). Both side margins trimmed, else fine.
