EDWARD BATES
(1793 – 1869) American lawyer, politician and judge. He represented Missouri in the US House of Representatives and served as the U.S. Attorney General under President Abraham Lincoln. Fine association A.L.S. as Attorney General on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 2, 1863, to ABRAHAM LINCOLN. In part: '...several packages have been sent to you, through my hands, containing strong recommendations of Brig'r Genl Davidson to be made Major General.../I have received several letters urging me to put you in mind of his name and merits - And especially in mind of his late brilliance and successful services in Arkansas...both Genl. Steele & Genl. Schofield had made honorable mention of Davison in their reports...'. Fine condition. JOHN W. DAVIDSON (1825-1881) had a good military record. From August 10 to November 3, 1863, he commanded the 1st Division of Frederick Steele's Army of Arkansas in his most distinguished role in the west. He led Union advance into central Arkansas and won the Battle of Bayou Fourche, which led directly to the fall of Confederate-held Little Rock. He would not receive his promotion despite Bates' efforts, but Andrew Johnson would promote him to major general by brevet.
