Description:

EDMUND SCHRIVER
(1812 – 1899) Union Brevet Brigadier General, fought at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Virginia campaign to Petersburg. Fine content, war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Fredericksburg, May 15, 1864, to Ulysses S. Grant. In the midst of the Battle of New Market, a desperate Schriver writes to request aid: ‘…I have to acknowledge the receipt of Lt. Genl Grant's communication of this date informing me of the presence of the Hampton Cavalry on our right, and directions to me to picket in that direction and to meet him with a unified force of Infantry and Cavalry…all proper measures will be taken, but I must say I have but 120 Infantry, and the cavalry are not to be depended on. A force appeared this morning on the telegraph road of horsemen and I have been obliged to keep quite a large number to watch the movement in that direction…'. In this famed battle, a meager force of 4,100 Confederates would defeat a Union force twice its size, led by Sigel. Needless to say, Sigel was thereafter replaced by David Hunter. Light edge wear, else very good.
