Fine content A.L.S.,3pp. 4to. Nashville, Tenn., June 19, 1871, in which Smith details his entire Confederate service. In small part: ‘...My appointment of Brig. Gen. is dated June 17, 1861. I continued to discharge the duties of Adjt. Gen. Until the Battle of Manassas, in all active operations personally commanding a division made up of Forney's Brigades of Alabama troopers and Elzey's Brigades of Ky., Maryland, Tenn. & Va. Regts. My appointment of Major General dates from October 11, 1861 and my command was the reserve Division of the Army of the Potomac...Appointment as Lieut. Gen. Is dated Oct. 11, 1862....I commanded the dept. of East Tenn. & Kentucky, West North Carolina & North Georgia with Stevenson...My appointment as General is dated Feb.19, 1864. I was ...in command of the Trans-Mississippi Department...over 60,000 on the rolls including the following divisions :Price, Mo. Shelby, Walker's Tex., Maxeys...Polinac's La., Churchill's Ark., Fagans Ark., Price ...Shelby....Truly yours, E. Kirby Smith'.
