Edith Somerville and Violet Ross were Irish novelists who collaborated under the pseudonym ‘Somerville and Ross', best known for their first novel ‘An Irish Cousin'. T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Ireland, Dec. 18, 1897, to an unknown critic, in part: ‘...Our publishers, Messrs Lawrence Bullen, have forwarded us your card. We beg to assure you that, though we do not claim to be geniuses, we do claim to have written ‘An Irish Cousin'...It was published in '89...as it is probably out of print we are writing to Messrs Mudie, desiring them to send you one of their second hand copies...accept it as a Christmas present from those ‘Literary Will O' The Wisps'...', signed ‘Martin Ross and Edith O. E. Somerville'. The letter is in the hand of Somerville, and she adds a postscript, reading, in full: ‘The latter took the name of Seilles Herring when publishing ‘An Irish Cousin', but has since abandoned it. ‘Martin Ross' was also a nom de plume and has been adhered to.' Lot includes the original holograph envelope, a typed version of the letter, and two 4.25 x 6.5 in. sepia photos of the women.
