EDITH CAVELL
(1865 - 1915) British World War I nurse and humanitarian, executed as a spy for helping hundreds of Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. War date A.L.S. as an alleged British spy, 2pp. 8vo., Bruxelles, Oct. 2, 1914, in French to Mr. L'Echevin of Public Instruction, asking him to: "... receive the pay of the sick people working in the communal schools. I showed up twice at the cashier's office without being paid. I enclose herewith the list [not included] of the sick who have been working since September 15...". Several dockets in other hands concerning the payment, with a final authorization on Oct. 3th, 1914. Minor folds, else fine. Cavell letters are exceedingly rare, especially those associated with her war years.
